“He’s got peas on his head…”

I was first introduced to Veggietales when my kids were almost too big for them, but we enjoyed watching the videos.  Fast forward to 2011 and my grandson absolutely loves watching the dvds.  So for his birthday (his first!), I just had to make him toys of his favorite characters (Bob, Larry and Jr.).

They are crocheted with a G hook and leftover worsted weight yarn from my stash, so I can’t give you yardage (sorry!).

Junior is about 5” tall and 2½ ” in diameter

Materials:

·         G crochet hook

·         Partial skein of medium green worsted weight yarn

·         Small amounts of yellow, red, white & black  worsted weight yarn

·         Stitch marker (split) or safety pin

·         Yarn needle

·         Stuffing

Abbreviations:

ch = chain	st = stitch		sc = single crochet	tog = together	slp st = slip stitch
pp = petite popcorn		yo = yarn over

Stitch explanation:

Petite Popcorn: yo and draw up loop 5 times, yo and draw through all loops on hook

Junior’s body

With green, ch 2

Round 1: work 6 sc in 2^nd ch from hook.  Don’t join, place marker in first sc for the beginning of the round.  Move marker up as each row is completed.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Round 3: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] repeat around (18)

Round 4: sc in back loops only in each st around

Round 5-14: sc in each st around – begin stuffing firmly as you go

Round 15: [sc in next st, pp in next stitch] repeat around

Round 16: [pp in next stitch, sc in next st] repeat around

Round 17: [pp in next stitch, sc2tog around] (12)

Round 18: [sc2tog, pp in next stitch] repeat around (8)

Round 19: [pp in next stitch, sc2tog around] (5)

Round 20: sc 2 tog twice.

Fasten off, weave in end.

Junior’s eyes

Right eye

With white, ch 2

Round 1: work 6 sc in 2^nd ch from hook – place marker

Round 2: 2 sc in next 2 st, slp st in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st, slp st in next st

Fasten off, weave in end.

Left eye

With white, ch 2

Round 1: work 6 sc in 2^nd ch from hook – place marker

Round 2: 2 sc in next 2 st, sc in next 4 st

Fasten off leaving tail.  Tack eyes together along side (right eye will be taller than left).

With black, embroider pupils in eyes.  With green, slp st in each st around eyes. Fasten off leaving tail.  Sew eyes below pp row.

Junior’s nose

With green, ch 2

Round 1: work 4 sc in 2^nd ch from hook – place marker

Round 2: work sc in each st around, slp st in next st

Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Sew nose directly under eyes (bottom of eyes touching nose).

Junior’s mouth

With black, embroider smile with right slant.

Junior’s hat

This is optional, but Junior often wears his hat.

With yellow, ch 2

Round 1: work 6 sc in 2^nd ch from hook.  Place marker.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)

Round 3: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] repeat around (18)

Round 4: sc in each st around

Round 5: [sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st] repeat around (24)

Round 6-8: sc in each st around

Break off yellow, weave in end.

Round 9: with red, sc in next 9 st, ch 1, turn

Round 10: sc in back loops only across, ch 1, turn

Round 11: sc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Round 12: sc2tog, sc in next 5 st, sc2tog, ch 1, turn

Round 13: sc2tog, sc in next 3 st, sc2tog

Fasten off, weave in end.
